Maple Tree Description

Its name means “hands folded in prayer on the mountain,” referring to its mounding growth pattern. Tamukeyama is one of the original Japanese maple trees, grown since the early 1700’s. Legend says the Tamukeyama is so special because it can grow out of the side of a mountain amongst rocks and boulders, a strong and beautiful specimen atop a harsh landscape. Growing about 6-10 feet tall and wide, its reddish purple lace leaves in the spring and summer turn to a crimson red in the fall. They love the full sun and high humidity, which makes Tennessee a great home for Tamukeyamas! If grown in the shade they will develop well, but will have more green leaves than red throughout the spring and summer.
