Maple Tree Description

This Japanese maple tree was named after its breeder, a nurseryman named Ken Twombly from Connecticut. He propagated it from a Bloodgood and it grew into a dense column shape, reaching only 3-4 feet wide and 10-12 feet tall in 10 years. It is one of the few columnar Japanese maples and stays red throughout the year. Best kept in the morning sun with afternoon shade or dappled sun all day, Twombly’s Red Sentinel leafs out as a brilliant reddish-pink color in the spring, turns to burgundy in the summer, and ends with a fire-engine red color in the fall. This cultivar is often planted two at a time to mark an entrance or walkway, and can be planted very close to walls and other structures or trees.
