Maple Tree Description

Acer Palmatum Red Pygmy is a standout specimen tree, with both a graceful form and a weeping leaf with a magic trick. As the leaves age they shrink, becoming narrow and much more interesting and the combination of both is a sight to see. The weeping Strap Leaf Linearilobum leaves are willow-like, while the tree’s form develops into a broader spreading shape, which is unique among strap leaf Linearilobum varieties. A fast growing pygmy variety, reaching 8 to 10 feet in height and width in 15 years. Does best with well drained soil, in a location with morning sun and afternoon shading.

Special, standout features:

Unique foliage shrinks, becoming narrower as each leaf ages, so the younger leaves are broader and much more palmate looking than the older willow-like ones
Broad, flat shape
Smaller specimen variety: 8 to 10 ft height and width
Willow like long slender foliage
Bright red leaves during the spring and early summer,
Olive green leaves with hints of red during the summer,
Spectacular display of gold and orange fall colors
Fast grower reaching full size in 15 years
Grows well in containers
Great for smaller gardens
A Royal Horticultural Society of Garden Merit Award winner.
