Maple Tree Description

The elegant Flavescens Japanese Maple Tree is a Spirit Hill Nursery favorite: we “Oooh” and “Aaah” over it all year long. It is a green weeping dissectum or laceleaf that eventually forms a mound shape like the Tamukeyama or the Inaba Shidare. As previously discussed, all weeping Japanese Maples can be staked to the height that you prefer, so size is variable up to 10 feet tall and wide. What makes this maple so special is its unique colors. In spring, the new leaves come out very light green with some pink tones. As spring changes to summer, the pink fades away and the green tones of the leaves will continue to darken as the summer goes on. In Latin “flavescens” means “becoming yellow” which is exactly what the leaves do in the fall- they even get splashes of orange. This beauty thrives in full sun and also does well in the shade. It does need to be protected from any frost after the leaves emerge in the spring.
