Maple Tree Description

Sango Kaku or Coral Bark Japanese Maple tree is another older, well known cultivar dating back to the 1800’s. Sango kaku in Japanese means “coral tower” as in a tower of red sea coral growing up from the bottom of the ocean, describing the color and shape of this tree. Its special feature is the red bark that comes out on the trunk and branches of the tree during the winter time after the leaves have fallen off, leaving a stunning red specimen that stands out in your yard. During spring, the leaves grow out of the still-red branches as a light green color with pink edges. The pink edges fade to all green in the summer and come back yellow in the fall with splashes of oranges and reds as the weather turns colder. The red bark also will fade to a normal tree color by the end of spring. Growing to an ultimate height of 20-25 feet and 15 feet wide, it will reach 15-18 feet in 10 years with a growth rate of about 1-2 feet per year. It loves morning sun but will need a few hours of shade between 2-5pm here in Tennessee in order to survive our hot and sunny summers. Come visit our nursery or meet us at a farmer’s market nearest you to see our plentiful selection!
