Maple Tree Description

The Bloodgood Japanese maple tree is one of the most popular cultivars, appearing in the United States well before World War II (1939). It was named after the Bloodgood Nursery in Long Island, NY, where it was developed. This upright, red tree is a fast grower and can ultimately reach 25 feet tall with an equal width. It is so beautiful and well-known that it won the RHS Award of Golden Merit. The palmate shaped leaves are a deep red/purple with a green underside, brightening to a crimson color in the fall. Here in Tennessee, the Bloodgood prefers morning sun and afternoon shade, but it can withstand full sun after it becomes about 4 feet tall. When it is younger its leaves will burn in the hot summer, so best to provide afternoon shade until it gets more mature. If kept in too much shade, it will revert to a green color in the summer.
